Week 30: Reading and Author Studies

This week, we caught many of our students reading, learning about reading, and talking about books and authors!

In this edition:

  • 2nd-3rd Grade Author Studies
  • 6th-7th Graders Discuss “I Am David”
  • Spelling Fun in 4th-5th
  • Teacher Appreciation Week
  • History Bowl – Part 2
  • Teacher-led Devotional Time

2nd-3rd Grade Author Studies

Our second and third-grade students have finished All About Reading for the school year! Way to go, students! Their newest reading project is embarking on author studies. This week, they read two stories by Keven Henkes, and they are beginning their Author Study packets. You can see the full video of Mrs. Van Beneden reading on our YouTube channel. (Links are below.)

Introduction to Author Studies and Kevin Henkes

Reading of Henkes’ “Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse”

6th-7th Graders Discuss “I Am David”

While 7th graders read “I Am David” last year, they still have opinions about the book. Since our 6th-grade students are reading it now, some of the students gathered at lunch to talk about it this week.

Spelling Fun in 4th and 5th

Students in 4th and 5th grade participated in a fun Pop-the-Balloon game for spelling.

Teacher Appreciation Week

While some schools are celebrating this next week (May 2-6), we chose to wait since our school has a few things going on next week. So please plan ahead for the week of May 9-13. (At-school days are May 10th and 12th.) We suggest getting together with others from your class to chip in on a gift card for your teacher. Just make sure to use our school login (see this week’s school newsletter) to access the Student Directory and send out a group text to other parents in your child’s class.

Here are the “favorites” questionnaires that our teachers filled out at the beginning of the year.

Kindergarten/First – Mrs. Jenny Nichols

Second – Mrs. Charlene Perez

Third – Mrs. Allison Van Beneden

Fourth/Fifth – Mrs. Cori Panyard

Language Arts – Middle School – Mrs. Leslie Hyland

Math – Middle School – Dr. Melissa Shipman

History Bowl – Part 2

Learnwell students enjoyed participating in the second part of the History Bowl to review all they have learned this year.

Teacher-Led Devotional Time

Our teachers do a fabulous job of leading devotions each morning for the students.
