Week 6: Welcome to Learnwell’s Community Page

Hello, Learnwell Families!

We are thrilled to announce that — as of Thursday, Sept. 23 — we will be finished with SIX weeks of school! It is our sincere hope that you and your children are settling in, getting to know a few people, and ideally, excited about what’s to come.

Highlights from Our First Six Weeks at Learnwell North Georgia

  • A visit from Mom — The mother of one of our students came to teach our fourth through seventh graders about Down Syndrome. Some of the main points she covered were the importance of using “people-first language,” such as referring to children with Down Syndrome as children with Down’s, not Down’s kids, and being good listeners who are patient. Not all kids with Down Syndrome are the same, just as not all kids without it are the same. The students also enjoyed hearing about a book called “Sam’s Top Secret Journal,” which has a character who is just like many of her friends, enjoying basketball, starring in community plays, and also happens to have Down Syndrome.
  • Getting to “act out” concepts related to the earth’s rotation in social studies.
  • A field trip to Tellus Science Museum to finish the first science unit about the universe. Students toured the museum’s hands-on exhibits such as gem mining, fossil digging and “The Big Back Yard.” They also got to see a show about the universe at the Bentley Planetarium.

  • Making cuneiforms while studying the Sumerian culture in ancient civilizations.
  • Outside time! While there have been a few rainy days, all students have had time to spend outdoors. Whether it was learning to craft, practicing spelling words with hopscotch, recess, or an outdoor lunch, getting to be in the sunshine has been good for everyone.
  • Our very first club period. In September, our students led clubs about reptiles, art and crafts. All of our students are so creative; we can’t wait to see what the next club period brings!
