“Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time and always start with the person nearest you.”

Serving In & Out of School
This week is one of our favorites at Learnwell! While our teachers and staff encourage, lead and facilitate service to others all year long, during Service Week, we host special ways to serve both inside and outside of the school. This week’s service included painting art for hospitals, libraries and schools nationwide through the Foundation for Hospital Art, organizing supplies for a ministry that serves homeless people, helping clean up around the school building, and making sandwiches for those who need an extra meal through The Sandwich Project. Thank you to our parents, students, and team of staff and teachers who participated in or helped facilitate these.

K-5th Grade Learns about the Holy Spirit
In elementary school discipleship this week, students walked into the cafeteria, and it was a mess! The Stuffie Takeover had been quite the upset of the room with snacks and trash thrown everywhere. Those stuffed animals did not do what they knew they should (e.g., clean up). Mrs. Cori used this as an analogy to display how the Holy Spirit convicts believers of their sins. Whether it’s doing what we know to be wrong or not doing what we know to be right, all of us have fallen short, according to Isaiah 53:6. The Holy Spirit doesn’t leave us (evidenced by the blue line) but instead, helps us by showing us when we’re off course of God’s way and His heart, and the Spirit helps us by making us new and leading us back to God’s ways.

Stuffie Takeover at Learnwell
The K-5th graders who met their individual reading goals last month got to bring their favorite stuffed animals to Learnwell for a 2-night sleepover. While at school, the security cameras caught all sorts of fun (and a little mayhem) going on! We are so proud of all the students who increased their reading during February!

9th & 10th Graders Host Lively Debates in English/Language Arts
Both ninth and tenth-grade classes participated in lively debates about whether they strongly or somewhat agreed, or even disagreed, with issues at stake in the novels they’re reading. All of the topics centered on civics and social justice. Many of these young leaders had excellent arguments for why they believed what they did. Our high school is full of inspiring students who think critically and deeply about what they’re learning. Way to go, students!

8th Graders Launched Study of Thessalonians with Creative Team-Building Activity
In discipleship and life skills, the 8th graders participated in–and persevered in–a team-building activity, much like the church at Thessalonica, which had to keep pressing into the hope they had in Christ even in the face of difficulty.

5th Graders Review: Fractions, Main Idea & Reading
Fifth graders have been hard at work reviewing concepts in math and language arts. They’ve practiced fractions, hunting for multiple main ideas in nonfiction summaries and read to their 6th-grade Buddies. We love seeing their perseverance to learn continually!

4th Graders Receive Character Reward from Chick-fil-A, Learn about Palestine and the United Nations in History
Ms. Robertson’s fourth-grade class has filled another pop jar! When they show integrity, honesty, kindness and other high-value character qualities, students in her class receive a pom for the class pop jar. Once it’s filled, they vote on a reward. This time, they voted on lunch from Chick-fil-A, and the Halcyon managers loved it so much, they donated a free meal card to every student! In social studies, they learned about the U.N. decision to partition Palestine. So, they created a visual representation of it in their classroom.

First Graders Play Memory to Review Nouns, Practice Reading with Buddies
The first-graders played a memory game to review irregular plural nouns, and they enjoyed the mild weather by going to the playground and practicing their reading skills with their 7th-grade Buddies.

7th Graders Finish Newspaper Writing, Work Hard in Math
The seventh-grade class finished their newspaper articles this week, and they worked hard in Math 7 and Pre-Algebra, building foundations for advanced math.

Elementary School Students Learn About Wyoming & National Parks
Some of our elementary school students’ parents visited last week to teach students about states (Wyoming), and one student shared about national parks she’d visited. Students even got to try bison jerky!

Sixth & Seventh Graders Visit Google’s Atlanta Office
Last week, the 6th and 7th graders took a field trip downtown to visit Google’s Atlanta office. What an inspiring place! They learned about Google’s commitment to open-source machine learning and AI and toured several of the Google Atlanta team’s gathering spaces, including one area where employees can bring their dogs, an area with local Atlanta art and sculpture, and an area that pays homage to the Georgia music scene. They also played basketball, enjoyed a catered lunch, and felt a wall covered in a Braille-emblazoned quote by civic rights activist John Lewis.

Lunch & Recess = Time to Build Community
At all grade levels, students enjoy the outdoor opportunities to gather. Whether eating lunch outside, working in the school garden, playing a game on the blacktop or running around the playground, students make the most of the sunshine.
