Week 24: Planting Seeds

“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.” ~ Robert Louis Stevenson

Valentine’s Day Fun

Several classes had parties to showcase their appreciation for classmates, and our Fun Friday art class designed a little Valentine’s magic too.

8th, 9th, and 10th Graders Learn Skills to Become Life-Ready

Our Life Skills curriculum is (we know we’re biased) arguably one of the least sung heroes of a middle and high school education at Learnwell. Students learn so many skills that are not taught in other schools. Just look at what our 8th-10th graders have been learning recently!

8th Grade

Students have been discussing communication, especially highlighting the power of words — on a personal level but also on a global scale.

This week, they played Jenga to illustrate that each relationship is a Jenga tower, and each block is like a conversation or moment with another person. When we use our words or actions to communicate poorly, insult, gossip or treat others unfairly, it’s like a block is removed. But if we choose kindness, curiosity, understanding, and forgiveness, our tower will be more substantial and will stand. In the midst of this exceptional object lesson, students also read James 3 and watched some TED Talks about the power of words.

9th & 10th Grade

Our ninth graders are exploring the power of words in a more personal way by reading Jon Acuff’s “Your New Playlist.” They’re discussing which messages they have told themselves are “broken,” and need to be replaced with whatever is true, excellent and worthy of praise. (Philippians 4:8) In 10th grade, they’re discussing how to solve problems with a variety of tools.

Fun Friday Electives Soaring Through Term 3

Our third term of Fun Friday Electives is going strong! Art, chorus, and the new robotics class for 3rd to 5th graders are all such enriching classes. Term 4 starts on March 21, so don’t hesitate to sign up on the Events & Extracurriculars website.

First Grade Grammar Gets Busy!

Our first graders got up from their desks to participate in a Possessive Noun Scoot this week. What an active way to learn about grammar!

Therapy Dogs Help Students Envision Ways to Serve in Healthcare, Education

A group of volunteers from Sit Stay Tay visited our K-5th grade classes this week to show them how therapy dogs are trained and what kind of work they do in libraries, schools, and hospitals. One of the dogs, Ryder the Dal, is famous, too! Check out his YouTube page. Miles and Juniper were so sweet and helpful. Miles can shut cabinet doors and assist with jacket removal, and Juniper brings calm to her patients and visitors.

5th Graders Get Spring-Ready by Planting Sugar Snap Peas

Our fifth graders were busy in the school garden this week. They learned about proper conditions for planting sugar snap peas and measured the soil’s temperature and pH levels. Then, they constructed an arbor for vining and planted the seeds. The crop should be ready in April for a school-day tasting!

6th & 7th Graders Learn About 1 Samuel

In discipleship, our sixth and seventh graders are reading through 1 Samuel. They tried their hand at acting out some of the stories in groupwork this week.

Elementary School Reading Challenge & Peer Editing

Second graders are showing their peer support by editing each other’s writing, and they were one of the first classes to meet their reading goals for the K-5th Read-A-Thon!
