Week 14: Growing in Grace

“Most people need love and acceptance a lot more than they need advice.” ~ Bob Goff

8th Graders Share Favorite Study Methods in StoryLab

As part of their Life Skills curriculum, students in eighth grade learn about brain science, types of learning methods, and then they try them out and decide which ones work best for their individual wiring, needs, and lifestyle. This week in the StoryLab, they shared some of their favorite study methods. Students also got behind the camera to record!

K-3rd Graders Shared Social Studies Passports, Learn Science in Discipleship

Students in kindergarten through third grade have been working on passports to various countries. Then, they shared what they learned about their countries with other students in social studies. They also discovered that scientific concepts can be used to explain the love of God, who saves us from all our sins through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. (Ask them what happens when you put your finger into the solution shown here and how that relates to our need for a Savior.)

Service = A Value at All Grade Levels

Throughout the school year, students at every grade level learn about and participate in serving others. Sometimes, it’s a simple task of cleaning up a table in the cafeteria; other times, they work together to help each other learn. In the second semester, students have the opportunity to serve the community, too. Learnwell aims to help students see that service is an attitude of the heart and a lifestyle, not a project, because it celebrates being curious, kind, and helpful in any environment, whether at school, at home, or in the community.

  • Students in 6th grade help fifth graders with their oral storytelling unit.
  • Others in 6th grade take an active role in restocking supplies and general cleaning.
  • Seventh graders help their kindergarten and first-grade Buddies love to learn.
  • One of our seventh-grade families teaches others what it means to embrace differences and be accepting of all.

Seventh Graders Dissect Worms, Share Poetry

Last week, our seventh graders got to work on their dissection unit as they explored the biology of living things, from plants to insects (worms!) and animals. They also recited poetry in English/Language Arts as part of their poetry unit.

Sixth Graders Dissect Worms in Science

The 6th graders are also learning through dissection and got a chance to explore the anatomy of a worm last week.

5th Graders Race to Explore Math Concepts, Paint Pumpkins & Complete Oral Storytelling, Cozy Writing Projects

The 5th graders challenged each other to compare and multiply decimals through math games, painted pumpkins and worked on oral storytelling in the StoryLab and cozy writing projects. One student even saved enough class cash to host a Show & Share, bringing a furry friend to class. Students also shared their novel projects after finishing Jeanne Birdsall’s “The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy.”

4th Graders Celebrate Highest Compost Amount in LW History

Our fourth graders celebrated bringing in the most food to compost in Learnwell history! Their efforts won’t be “wasted,” as the compost helps the school garden, and their popcorn party was the cherry on top of all their hard work. Way to go, class!
