Week 25: Visible vs. Seen

Visible vs. Seen

“Being visible is not the same as being seen.”

-Sarah E. Westfall

Author/speaker Sarah Westfall writes, “…I traded presence for performance. I leaned into my high-achieving ways and hoped that visibility would translate into fitting in. I thought perhaps by being a volleyball team captain or class president or a resident assistant, I would position my way into belonging. But being visible is not the same as being seen.”

She continues, “The carefully crafted walls and shiny exterior I had built around myself appeared good, but on the inside, I was hollow. I wanted so desperately to be safe, seen, respected, and enjoyed not for what I did or how I appeared, but for Who. I. Was.”

In these paragraphs, Westfall is describing her own realization that visibility is not the equivalent of being truly known and appreciated simply for who you are. It’s this quality of being seen AND known — being accepted as you are, not as you will yourself to be — that we long to model and embrace among our student body and among our Learnwell families.

May you find time this week to connect, reset, and invite another into who you truly are.

This week, we celebrated a milestone here at school, and you should definitely celebrate too — the 100th day of school! Here are some fun photos of our students who dressed up as 100-year-olds.

Discover Science Center Visits

Discover Science Center came and helped students learn about circuits to finish off the science unit.

St. Patrick’s Day Fun

Some classes made fun treats — Irish Soda Bread and Shamrock Shakes — to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!
